A Shared Space for the Whole Community
Northstowe is growing, and with that growth comes the need for spaces that bring people together, support wellbeing and help build a strong sense of community. This initiative aims to create a permanent cultural, spiritual and community hub that serves the whole town — not just today, but for generations to come.
The proposal brings together two complementary elements under one roof: a Hindu temple and an interfaith community hub. While the temple provides a place of worship for the Hindu community, over 79% of the building is dedicated to shared community space, open to all residents regardless of faith, background or belief. This ensures the building is first and foremost a community asset.
Designed for Connection, Wellbeing and Belonging
The community hub will offer flexible spaces for activities that matter to local people. These include youth and family programmes, wellbeing and support groups, arts and cultural activities, learning sessions, volunteering, environmental initiatives and community-led events. By creating a safe, welcoming and all-weather space, the hub will help reduce isolation, support positive mental health and give people more opportunities to connect.
Placing the temple and community hub side by side creates a unique opportunity for learning, understanding and shared experience. It allows different communities to come together naturally, encouraging respect, curiosity and meaningful relationships, while still meeting specific cultural and spiritual needs.
Led by the Community, for the Community
This project is led by a resident-run charity made up of local volunteers who live, work and raise families in Northstowe. Decisions are guided by public benefit, transparency and fairness, ensuring the space is shaped by local needs rather than external interests.
A clear and inclusive booking system will make sure community groups have fair access to the facilities. The aim is to support a wide range of local activities and organisations, working alongside existing venues and services to complement what is already available in the town.
