What is this project about?
This proposal aims to create a shared Temple and Community Hub for Northstowe. It is designed as a permanent space that supports wellbeing, learning, cultural activity and community connection, while also providing a place of worship for the Hindu community. The majority of the space will be open and accessible to all residents.
Who is the space for?
The hub is for everyone in Northstowe. It will welcome people of all backgrounds, faiths and beliefs, including those with no religious affiliation. While part of the building will be used for Hindu worship, over 75% of the space is intended for shared community use.
Why does Northstowe need this?
As Northstowe continues to grow, there is increasing demand for all-weather spaces that support community activities, youth engagement, wellbeing programmes and social connection. Feedback from residents highlights the need for more inclusive, flexible facilities that bring people together and support a strong sense of belonging.
Is this only a religious building?
No. This is a shared-space project. The building combines a place of worship with a community hub in one integrated facility. Most of the building will be used for community activities such as workshops, youth programmes, arts and cultural events, volunteering and support groups.
Will the space be open to people of other faiths or no faith?
Yes. The community hub is open to everyone. It is designed to be inclusive, welcoming and accessible, regardless of faith, belief or background. Many of the activities will be non-religious and focused on wellbeing, learning and community connection.
Who will run and manage the hub?
The project is led by a resident-run charity made up of local volunteers. Governance is community-focused, with decisions guided by public benefit, transparency and fairness. The aim is to ensure the space reflects local needs and serves the wider community.
How will community groups access the space?
An open and transparent booking system will be in place to ensure fair access for local groups and organisations. This system will help manage demand, avoid conflicts and ensure the space is used in a balanced and inclusive way.
Will this replace existing community facilities?
No. The hub is intended to complement existing community centres and services, not replace them. It will provide additional capacity and support a wider range of activities, working alongside what is already available in Northstowe.
What kinds of activities will take place?
Activities may include youth and family sessions, wellbeing and support groups, educational workshops, arts and cultural programmes, volunteering initiatives, inter-community events and celebrations. The space is designed to be flexible so it can adapt to changing community needs over time.
How will this benefit young people and families?
The hub will provide safe, positive spaces for learning, creativity and social interaction. Programmes will support confidence, skills development and wellbeing, helping young people and families feel supported and connected within the community.
How can residents share their views or ask questions?
Residents are encouraged to share feedback, ask questions and get involved. Community input is an important part of shaping the project, and ongoing engagement will help ensure the hub reflects local priorities and aspirations.
How can I support the initiative?
You can support the initiative by learning more, sharing your views, spreading the word and showing public support. Volunteering opportunities and further ways to get involved will be shared as the project progresses.
This is a community-led proposal, shaped by local people and designed for the benefit of all. We welcome your questions, feedback and ideas as the project continues to develop.
